Western landscapes

I was again commissioned to do several more landscapes, for mini-series I'm working on. Inspired by Carl Rungius' paintings of the Canadian Rockies, I kept the colors within the 1930's styles, but erred on the side of violet and gold (per the designer's request).

Eucalyptus School

In the 1920s, the California Impressionists had a following of artists that painted Southern Californian eucalyptus so often, they were deemed the "Eucalyptus School."

For the miniseries that I'm working on, I was commissioned to paint some Pasadena landscapes in the vein of the California Impressionists. Here are two of the larger paintings, to be displayed in a 1930s restaurant!

It was only a matter of time before I inserted myself into a scene from the "Alien" franchise. I mixed a few elements from different photos I found online, although the following 5 are the basis for my illustration.

Instead of a typical Jedi costume, I thought it would be fun to insert myself into the battle of Hoth from "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back." I actually had about two dozen reference photos to use. I was going to put in snowspeeders and AT-ATs, but the concept worked better simplified. Just a guard over Echo Base, in the calm before the storm.

My family lives about a mile from the Madison Valley Buffalo Jump, and I created this image for my dad's blossoming honey trade. It will be used as part of a label advertising "Wild Flower Honey from the Madison Valley."

Another batch of illustrations went up on I'm From Driftwood. The story had 5 different song vignettes, which meant 5 different illustrations. Yikes! I gave it a (terrible) go without photo reference, so had to start over. Those illustrations will never see the light of day.

Mug Shots

I painted these vintage mug shots for my apartment in West Hollywood. In Texas, my friend had seen a portrait of Jane Fonda's mug painted on a mirror. I thought it'd be fun to have these old Hollywood icons on our lavender walls.

I bought cheap frames, banged them up, and painted them white in our alley one night.

Each portrait took about a day to complete. I had originally wanted to paint both views of each entertainer (portrait and profile), but moved to New York before I could complete them.

I thought it'd be interesting to show how I approached this rex drawing. I started out with a photo of a skeleton, and drew over what I knew the anatomy to be.

Created with multiple layers, I refined each major muscle group until I could add detailed skin and texture.

The final version. It was actually drawn as a birthday present for my Jurassic Park-obsessed best friend Huntley. The two of us can often be found quoting JP in it's entirety...and getting drinks out of it.

More progress. I accidentally flattened the image, and saved over my only version. That sucks. So I kind of had to cut out, and start over with some of the shapes and what not. I'm usually much better at saving my different versions, as the layers build up. Meh. Here's the progress thus far, a Battle above Coruscant. Had some requests to include a Bothan Assault Cruiser...so I did two. :)
